CAIRO – 30 October 2022: COP27 focuses on providing solutions that make climate motion help solving community problems and crises, not so as to add to them, the UN Climate Change High Level Champion for Egypt and UN Special Envoy on Financing 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, Mahmoud Mohieldin, said Sunday.

These remarks got here during his lecture in Green Economy Forum, throughout the Green Economy Ambassadors initiative launched by Sadat University, with the participation of Dr Khaled Gafar, the university president.

Mohieldin stated that the conference goals to implement climate motion without ignoring the present crises on the earth corresponding to the rise of fuel and food prices, and the rise of poverty rates, especially after COVID-19 and the war in Ukraine.

“Climate motion might be useless if it results in higher rates of poverty and unemployment.” Mohieldin said, stressing the need of adopting a holistic approach that links achieving climate targets to the achievement of the opposite SDGs.

He emphasized that climate motion shouldn’t be shortened to emissions reduction, but it surely also needs to include adapting to climate change, coping with losses and damages, and mobilizing sufficient finance for all climate motion features.

The climate champion confirmed that there is not going to be a room in COP27 for more pledges and guarantees without having a selected framework of implementing them on the bottom through the concerted efforts of governments, international organizations, private sector, NGOs, corporations, universities and research centers.

Mohieldin said that COP27 prioritizes enhancing the regional and native dimensions of climate motion through two unprecedented initiatives that are the five regional roundtables initiative which have been coordinated with the UN and resulted in 400 regional projects all around the world wherein 50 of them might be showcased in Sharm El Sheikh to begin the actual implementation.

The second initiative, based on Mohieldin, is the National Initiative for Smart Green Projects launched by Egypt government, he clarified that the initiative might be presented in COP27 as a model for localizing development and climate motion.
