Environmental organization Greenpeace Canada also welcomed the choice, saying it has long fought for extending responsibility to producers as a solution to battle plastic pollution.

The David Suzuki Foundation applauded the reform, saying it promotes ecodesign amongst producers.

The Quebec government announced last month that it’s expanding its recycling deposit system to incorporate glass, plastic and metal bottles. The province said the changes will prompt higher recycling and simplify the method for each the general public and firms.

The brand new recycling program is ready to return into effect in 2022. It is anticipated to be fully operational by 2025.
