A $2.4m natural gas-fired cogeneration and geothermal project for a community in Edmonton in Ottawa has won a $1.2m grant from Canada’s federal government.

Funding from the government’s Clean Energy Fund and its Market Development Incentive Payments Fund will pay for half of a system planned for a 19-acre community of seniors and working families in Hazeldean in Edmonton.
A natural gas-fired generator will power the community’s homes while excess heat is pumped underground and drawn back in winter to warm homes, according to the Edmonton Journal.
Canada’s Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver announced the grant on 25 May, according to the newspaper
Utility bills at the ageing townhouses are set to fall by 40% through the project, Christenson Developments told the paper.
Greg Christenson, president of Christenson Developments, said the combination of cogeneration and geothermal storage would serve as a pilot project for other housing developments.
Over the project the company plans to renovate 236 homes dating from the 1950s and to build 264 apartments. Construction is due to starts in spring 2013 with the first homes completed in 2015.
